Blog Marathon Post 11 - Raining offers

I take today's newspaper in my hands to go through what is happening in the world and predominantly I see advertisements of grocery shops, apparel brands, electronic brands and also shops selling weight loss and hair growth. I am amazed to see the highlights of the world affairs sidelined by these offers. 50 % sale is the catch-line and consumers like me fall for it easily.

What we do not understand or want to understand that it is a marketing trick. The shops selling different brands first increase the prices and then put flat 50 % sale on it. On seeing 50 % we think we are buying at half price but we might end up buying at the same or slightly higher rate too. Earlier sales and discounts were offered only during festivals. But now every week there are some or the other discounts and sales going on. We have become compulsive buyers I feel, rather compelled buyers. I know a few people who feel they haven't really spent their week well if they do not buy something or the other stuff.

Online shopping has become a great craze in India now. Flipkart, Jabong, Amazon, Snapdeal, Bigbasket, zopnow, zivame etc. offer everything ranging from groceries to clothes and lingerie at the click of a button. No need to going physically to a store in the maddening rush and crowd and no need of finding a parking place and no need of standing in a queue in front of a trial room. Try it out at your home and if it does not fit or you do not think it is of good quality, return it without any hassles. Life is simplified with more and more apps or different brands jumping into the foray. With a smart phone in your hand, you can order anything and everything you want.

On one hand, India is struggling to feed the ever-rising population and on the other hand people are spending more and more on all the good things and also unwanted things. Some have 10 pairs of footwear and some don't. Some wear a lehenga of Rs. 50000/- just for one time and for others it is the income of their lifetime. The malls have brought employment to many, but the hand artists and farmers are suffering in this race to earn more and more.

India is and will always remain a land of paradox. What do you think?
