Tom Hanks - A fine actor

It's December, its Christmas time and more than half of the world population is busy celebrating Christmas with family. But it is also the most boring time of the year for us, who don't celebrate the festival, have nowhere to go because it is cold all over Europe and schools have close to 3 weeks holidays. T got bored on the second day of vacations and he asks me almost every day about the school reopening. Next year I plan to go to India during this time. Last year it was the same story and this year too. So how to kill time in this dull and grey weather? Watch movies! And yes I did a good job by selecting two movies of my favorite actor, Tom Hanks. What were the movies?

The first movie I saw was Bridge of Spies.

I quote "Bridge of Spies is a Steven Spielberg directed spy thriller movie that stars Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Austin Stowell, and Will Rogers. It tells the story of how an obscure New York lawyer is recruited to negotiate an exchange of spies between the United States and the Soviet Union".  Tom Hanks plays the role of a lawyer brilliantly who believes in humanity and loyalty towards the nation. He helps a Russian spy get back to his country and in exchange of that spy, he gets his two countrymen who are stuck in the Soviet Union for wrong reasons. The direction is brilliant, the cold war, the Berlin wall, the tension, the helplessness of people across the wall, the winter weather conditions coupled with the war setting gave me a good chill. Tom Hanks eases into the character and one can't help falling in love with such a beautiful person. His tone, his body language, his sternness while demanding two people against one is brilliant. No doubt this movie won the hearts of people and got rave reviews.

The second movie that I saw was Sully.

I quote "After landing US Airways Flight 1549 in New York's Hudson River, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) faces an investigation that threatens to destroy his career and reputation". The movie captivated me. Even after saving 150 lives on board, the captain and the second officer has to undergo an investigation in which the authorities want to prove that the decision to land in the River could have gone terribly wrong and there were other options to land the plane safely. But with the experience and reaction time, that the Captain has, he believes it was the best he could do or else he would have crashed into the nearby buildings. The Captain gets nightmares of crashing into the buildings almost every night and we can sense how relieved he must have felt in not losing one single life after taking this so-called rash decision of landing into the river and not choosing to go back to some other airport for landing. Tom Hanks proves his mettle once again! His nightmares, his relief when he gets to know that all are safe, his self-doubt if the plane hadn't landed properly in the river what would have been the repercussions etc. comes out very well. He proves to the investigating team that the human response played a key role in this decision and it was the best he could do in his capacity and in that stressful time.

Other movies of Tom Hanks which I equally like:
1) You have got mail
2) Cast Away
3) Catch me if you can
4) Forrest Gump ( My all-time favorite)
5) Saving Private Ryan

He has a knack of essaying real-life characters and most of his roles are inspired by people in real life. Hollywood takes the risk of making movies of simple people who have made a great difference to humanity. Unlike Bollywood who makes movies of mediocre people like Sanjay Dutt (Bollywood actor who had a role in the riots in Mumbai), Azharuddin (the cricketer who was the captain of Indian Cricket team for a few years and was responsible for match-fixing) etc.

Anyways, Tom Hanks also has a book to his credit called "Uncommon Type" and I plan to read it soon.

I wish him all the success and look forward to more meaty and interesting roles!

The dilemma

My mother-in-law left for Pune today after spending two and a half months with us in Germany. And suddenly the house seems empty without her...
