Heidelberg

21st June is the longest day and also happens to be the birthday of A's grandmother and T's great grandmother. She visited us for two weeks in Karlsruhe and to celebrate her 88th birthday, A planned a trip to Heidelberg. So that we all could go together, we took the train to Heidelberg and it was a very smooth and comfortable ride for all of us. She was in the wheelchair and she walked a bit when it was time to get in and get out of the train or the bus. 4 generations traveling together was so much fun and we tried to capture all the possible moments together.

Heidelberg is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany and it is one of my favorites too! I had visited it first in 2002-2003 with student gang and then in 2013 with T and mother in law and now again in 2019 with the whole extended family. It's a student city, has a lot of cafes, restaurants in the market square. It has a very famous university, where Sanskrit is taught and a palace which can be seen and explored with the help of a train which takes us up there. There is also a walking route to go up there, but for kids and old people, the funicular train takes people and the area in and around the palace is also worth seeing. It has big gardens where one can sit, stroll, see the valley and the surrounding hills. It also has a famous river, the Neckar where people crowd in Summers for basking in the sun, sipping drinks, just reading, chitchatting. One can also just take a walk along the banks of the river. It's lovely in the evenings, especially.

You can read more about it here:

We just went around the marketplace which was very crowded. It was a holiday season and people were enjoying the nice weather and the sun. We went to a dainty pastry shop and had different kinds of pastries and coffee. We celebrated the birthday by cutting the small pastry piece. After that, we roamed around and shopped for some souvenirs which the guests could take back to India. We roamed a little and as the youngest and the oldest member was tired, we headed back to Karlsruhe to enjoy a delicious Indian treat in an Indian restaurant and came back home at about 10 pm. A day well-spent!

It's a very vibrant city. I love the pulse of this city. It reminds me of my student days. It's always flowing with people and is full of life. Cafes, restaurants, libraries, museums keep it alive and happening. It's a must visit if you like to see an idyllic and beautiful, yet vibrant and colorful city. I plan to take my parents too when they visit me in September.

My mother-in-law left for Pune today after spending two and a half months with us in Germany. And suddenly the house seems empty without her...
