The accident

There I go again, into silence and oblivion to the blog world. All other people must have churned lot of things during this one month and I am just contemplating on what to write and should I write and for whom should I write.

Our black Hyundai Getz is finally home after 3 weeks from the garage.

Yes, she got injured in an accident on 12th October and was badly bruised at the rear right side. Thankfully, my hubby travelling in it wasn’t injured and my baby was not sitting back in his usual child seat. The car was not on the road, she was in the lane, waiting to be parked and suddenly a motorcycle with a speed of 180 km/hr rammed into her and I could hear the thud sitting inside the house. The motorcyclist fled and fell down at a distant bus stop. Luckily there was a person with his dog on the footpath, who saw the motorcycle hitting the car. My husband didn’t see anything, he just heard something coming like a lightning, hitting the car and then moving away with the same alarming speed. He quickly got out and called me out of the house. The man with the dog called the police immediately and told us what had happened. There was one more couple who saw this motorcycle hit our car and they immediately stopped there for the police to arrive.

The police arrived, did the routine investigation. We all were standing out, shivering in the cold waiting for some news or action. Then another team of police came who were ‘accident specialists’. Our statement was recorded and so was of the couple’s who saw the accident happen. Photographs were taken, evidence was collected. The police gave us the registration number of the motorcyclist and also the insurance company’s name with which he was registered. We were asked to contact the insurance company and they would take it forward. We were also asked to call the accident specialist to get further info on the following Friday.

Thankfully, we got a replacement car and our movement was not restricted completely. We called the accident specialist in 3 days and he told us that it can’t be ascertained if we were at fault (Imagine he saying this after there was 1 eye witness and the motor cycle parts and the injured motorcyclist were discovered at a distance) and he also didn’t know if the insurance company would help us in getting the car repaired. He told us to find a lawyer in case we wanted to investigate further in this matter. He was not ready to divulge any further information. In Germany, there are insurances for every other thing. For dogs, for getting teeth repaired, for seeing a lawyer, for fighting a case etc. etc. obviously, we couldn’t have hired a lawyer as it would have costed us a fortune. We gave up that thought and then began my calls with the insurance company of the motorcyclist.

For the next 4 weeks, we were waiting for that motor cyclist to report the accident to his insurance company, but somehow he didn’t notify the company and I was calling the insurance company thrice a week or so to get some info and lead. He was badly injured and was also hospitalized, but we were surprised how come no one from his family reported it or why was nobody concerned here about the damages to the car. What if it was not only the car which was damaged? Would the police and the insurance company have reacted in the same manner? We had no idea of what was really going in the background and as nothing was coming through, we finally decided to give our car to the workshop, which was suggested by the insurance company. We wanted to give it to the authorized Hyundai dealer, but the insurance company wasn’t sure if they would be able to compensate the charges for repair in the Hyundai workshop. So, we had no choice but to hand over the car to the insurance company assigned garage.

After inspection, we were told it would take around 3 weeks to get her fully up and running. And yesterday finally, we brought her back. She is like our family member now. Earlier too, twice, she was hit by somebody, by mistake and the people driving had admitted their mistake, they had waited for the police to arrive and everything went on smoothly. But this time, for no fault of ours, we had to undergo a lot of mental stress. The culprit is not punished or warned or reprimanded. God knows, how is he doing? Is he well, up and running? We have no idea and we won’t be given any information also I guess.

Was a learning experience and it gave me an insight of how complicated the rules are for outsiders like me. And I also wish that our car now leads a carefree and healthy life as she has been hit thrice already and for no fault of hers or my hubby’s and that was the last time, something so alarming happened to her and us.

  1. It's scary to see our cars get damaged so... I can well imagine your relief and happiness to see your car back. It's interesting to see that you refer your car as "her"... make me think we so become attached to our vehicles that we start developing attachment for them as if they were another dear human being. It would have been nice to have a name for "her"...

The dilemma

My mother-in-law left for Pune today after spending two and a half months with us in Germany. And suddenly the house seems empty without her...
