Blog Marathon Post 3 - Life without screens!

Yesterday I suddenly decided to not be connected to the wi-fi all the time when I am working at home and it was really a quiet and nice experience. The messages on whatsapp were not popping all the time and the mails landing in the inbox, be it important or not were not bothering me at all. I felt like going back to the early 90’s where the phone was used just to call and message each other and smartphones were not known.

How much we really lose out by constantly being at different screens at different times in a day. Be it laptop, mobile screen, TV, ipad, ipod, Kindle etc.  Today it feels incomplete if we are not staring at some screen or the other. We think we can’t do anything if these screens do not function or are not available at some point. Who observes nature nowadays? Who sits by the window sill observing nature and listening to Vividh Bharati? Or sits and paints something? Or writes a poem or two by his/her own hand? All these options are available again in some screen or the other. There are apps for every hobby nowadays. Be it listening to music or painting or writing. Chatting is also hardly face to face now. Everything happens on whatsapp and gchat and facetime. Evenings with chai and pakoda and friends is a distant dream.

Screens affect our health adversely. The radiations of all these gadgets affect the hormones in our body and then problems like hormonal imbalance, disturbed sleep, and loss of appetite, loss of social contact which then leads to depression, suicidal tendencies and what not. We should learn to disconnect ourselves from these gadgets for some time and spend time with ourselves. We should learn to unwind without the gadgets, read a book in print, draw or paint something on canvas, listen to nice music, play some board games or cards with kids or other members of the family, play keyboard or any musical instrument of your choice.

Let’s get back to a healthy life – devoid of screens.
